Poker- History and Origin

No expert can accurately identify and pinpoint the origins of poker. Thorough research had been conducted to no avail. It seems poker is basically a fusion of countless card games. Historians have to an agreement about its history. They believe elements of other card games have been taken and combined together to come up with something so much interesting. Poker then is an evolution of card games.

Basing on several elements and key features of the game like the use of bluff and excellent hand combination to win the main prize, poker stems from a genre called 'vying games'. The prize, of course, is the wager made. Bluffing is essential to get a much need edge over the dealer and the rest of the players. Poker demands from you the best combination of cards possible.

Some intellectuals assumed the word poke is derived from the French word 'poque'. Poque stemmed from 'pochen' which is German for 'to knock'. Still these assumptions are not based on any specific evidence. From Chinese dynasties during the 900 AD to 13th century Egypt and Persia, poker's origin was unsuccessfully associated.

The first reference made to the game was in 1829 when an English actor Joseph Crowell talked about a certain game that resembled that of poker. The game was introduced in America during the 1850s. It became very popular during the 19th century when soldiers during the civil war played it. These soldiers brought the game with them when they were assigned on other parts of the globe like Asia pacific.

When gambling was declared illegal during 1910, poker was excluded from the games that were considered gambling. It was described by the attorney general of California at that time that the game of poker demands more than just pure luck and chance. The game requires intelligence and wit. A player should have the necessary skills and talent to be successful at the game.

There was just no stopping poker's rise to fame. Its dominance on the casino's widely played games continued to strengthen throughout the 20th century. Currently, it is probably the most popular of all casino card games. Countless poker tournaments, like the World Series of Poker, are organized. Basing on the number of participants who want to try their luck at winning the grand prize, poker has truly gone a long way. Even celebrities have done their share of showing their enthusiasm with the game. Online casinos, magazines, books and other poker-related materials emerged. Poker is a game to reckon with.
